Joseph Torbert Jr ('47)

Joseph Leonard Torbert Jr. of Lake Wales died Monday, June 16, 2008, at his home. He was 81.

Born May 6, 1927, in Arcadia, Fla., he attended Lake Wales High School and graduated in 1945. He served in the United States Navy from 1945 to 1947. He attended the University of Florida and graduated with a degree in business. He lived in Clearwater for 27 years and was advertising director for the Clearwater Sun and later was a partner in the Direct Factory Men’s Wear clothing store. He moved back to Lake Wales in 1977 and owned and operated Torbert’s Country Store in Lake of the Hills.

Mr. Torbert was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Allie Torbert and brother, Tom Torbert.

Survivors include a sister, Barbara Ann Holland; four children, Terrie Torbert Bennett of Lake Wales, Larry Torbert of Dunedin, Alan Torbert of Anthony, Fla., and Jennifer Torbert Fulbright of Lake Wales; 11 grandchildren, Brian Torbert, Joe Bennett, Niki Torbert Thigpin, Jessica Torbert Alexander, Joshua Fulbright, Jadi Bennett Hargas, Kasey Torbert Childress, Sarah Lance Hollie, Kory Fulbright, Lucy Torbert, and Luke Torbert; eight great-grandchildren, Christopher Thigpin, Brooke Fulbright, Allie Childress, Kaylie Fulbright, Kayden Fulbright, Austin Thigpin, Alex Torbert, and McKenzie Hollie.
